Introduction

Administrators can add and assign devices within the Calling Admin Portal. In this guide, we’ll review how to add a device. And then, we’ll demonstrate how to add a user and assign the user a device.

Note: If you have the Activation Code Generation feature enabled, you do not need to first add the device before you can assign an activatable device to a user. Read more about this feature below in the Assigning a Device to a User – By Activation Code section.


Adding a Device

  1. Log in to the Calling Admin Portal.
  2. Select the Devices tab from the left-hand navigation.
  3. Select Add Ported Device.

  5. The Add Device wizard will appear. From here, choose the Site where you would like to add the device.
  6. Next, choose the device you would like to add from the Device drop-down menu.
  7. Note: You can only choose the available devices for your location. If you do not see the model listed, please contact your service provider.

  8. Enter the MAC Address of the device to be added and select Save. The new device will now show up in your device list.

Adding a User

Now that the device is added, you can assign it to a user. To quickly set up a user, go to the Quick Start menu from the Calling Admin Portal dashboard.

  1. Select Set Up a User from the Quick Start menu.

  3. The user setup wizard will appear. Enter the user details including the user’s First and Last Name, Email, and User ID. The email entered here will be used as the main method of communication with the user. The user ID must be in the format of an email address.
  4. Select Next to save and continue.

  6. Next, determine the assignments for the user, including the user’s Phone Number, Extension and Station. After you select the station package for the user, you will be provided with the soft client apps available to assign the user. Place a checkmark next to the apps you would like to assign the user. This can later be modified by editing the user profile on the Users tab.

Assigning a Device to a User – By Activation Code

The final step to adding a user is to assign a device to the user. This step is optional. If you have the Activation Code Generation feature enabled, you will have the option to set up the device By activation code or By MAC address. For this example, we will go through the steps for adding an *activatable device. When adding a device By activation code, the device does not need to be added in the Devices page prior to adding here.

*Note: The Activation Code feature is only compatible with the following Cisco MPP devices. If you are assigning a device other than the ones listed below, you will need to choose the By MAC address option.

  • Cisco 6821, 6841, 6851, 6861, 6871
  • Cisco 7811, 7821, 7832, 7841, 7861
  • Cisco 8811, 8832, 8841, 8845, 8851, 8861, 8865
  1. Select By activation code, then choose the Device from the Find and add a device search bar. A list of available devices for your site will appear.
  2. Select Save to save your changes.

  4. The user has now been added and assigned a device, and an email with the activation code is automatically generated and sent to the email address that was entered for the user. As the administrator, you can view the activation code by clicking the Show activation code link.

  • From this page, you can access the code and perform the following:
    • Copy – code is copied to your clipboard.
    • Email – code is sent to an alternate email address
    • Print – code is sent to the selected printer

Note: This code expires after 30 days.

What’s next?

  • When you or the user is ready to activate the device, you simply enter this code when prompted. Once the device is successfully activated, you can configure it in the Users or Devices tabs within the Calling Admin Portal.
  • The user has now been added and is available to configure settings and services on the Users tab in the Calling Admin Portal. For steps on how to configure features and services available for users, see the Managing user features section of this site.

Assigning a Device to a User – By MAC Address

The final step to adding a user is to assign a device to the user. This step is optional and will pull from the list of devices you have already added to the system.
If the Activation Code Generation feature is not enabled, your Device screen in the setup wizard will look like below, and you will only have the option to assign the device via MAC Address.

  1. Select a Device from the Find and add a device search bar. A list of MAC address and device combinations will appear.
  2. Select the number of ports. This is the line that plugs into the wall.
  3. Select Save to save your changes.

What’s next?

  • Now that your device has been assigned, it can be set up manually. You can configure it in the Users or Devices tabs within the Calling Admin Portal.
